Pope Leo XIV leads Assisi celebrations of Saint Francis' 800th anniversary

The Diocese of Vigevano prepared a solemn pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of the Sacred Mountain of Orta for 5 September, marking the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis of Assisi. Archbishop Angelo Giacinto Scapardini was slated to preside over the event, with local clergy and authorities coordinating the large‑scale religious procession.

On 6 August, Pope Leo XIV arrived in Assisi by helicopter, landing at the sports field near the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. He was welcomed by Archbishop Felice Accrocca, regional officials and the mayor of Assisi. The Pope addressed roughly 2 150 young participants of the Go! Franciscan Youth Meeting, answered their questions, and later presided over a Eucharistic celebration in the basilica, presenting a missionary charter that summarises reflections from the four‑day gathering.

Both events form part of the broader commemorations of Saint Francis' death, combining local pilgrimages with a high‑profile papal visit to highlight the saint’s spiritual legacy across Italy.
