Pope Leo XIV marks 80th anniversary of Monte Amiata Cross
Pope Leo XIV has sent a message of spiritual unity to the diocesan community of Siena, Colle Val d’Elsa, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Chiusi, and Pienza to mark the 80th anniversary of the restored monumental cross on Monte Amiata.
The 22-meter-tall cross was restored to its original beauty following damage sustained during the Second World War. The upcoming celebration on August 26, 2026, commemorates the reconstruction of the monument, which serves as a significant symbol for the local communities.
In a telegram sent via Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Pope expressed his hope that the anniversary would encourage a renewed awareness of the cross as a symbol of redemption and an invitation to walk together in solidarity and peace.
