Pope Leo XIV named Papal Confrater of St George’s Chapel
Pope Leo XIV has accepted the honorary title of ‘Papal Confrater’ of the College of St George at St George’s Chapel in Windsor. The appointment, made with the consent of King Charles III, serves as a symbol of spiritual connection, ecumenical friendship, and Christian brotherhood.
The honor recognizes the long-standing relationship between the Holy See and the Windsor institution, as well as progress in relations between the Roman Catholic Church, the Church of England, and the Anglican Communion. This gesture follows a reciprocal exchange: one year after King Charles III and Queen Camilla visited the Vatican in October 2025, where the King was named a ‘Royal Confrater’ of the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls, the Pope has now accepted this reciprocal title.
Special seating is being prepared for both religious leaders at their respective sites. A dedicated chair for the King is located at the Basilica in Rome, while a chair for the Pope will be unveiled at St George’s Chapel in Windsor at a later date. Additionally, King Charles III is expected to attend a service this autumn to honor a gift from the Pope.
