Vatican summit marks tenth anniversary of Amoris Laetitia

Pope Leo XIV has convened a major summit at the Vatican to mark the tenth anniversary of the apostolic exhortation ‘Amoris Laetitia’. The meeting, which includes heads of Eastern Catholic churches and presidents of bishops' conferences, focuses on the ‘beauty and fragility of families’ in the modern world.

Discussions have addressed several critical challenges facing the Church and contemporary society. Participants noted a global decline in both civil and religious marriage rates. Key themes include the impact of migration on family structures, the influence of the digital age on relationships, and the difficulties young people face regarding lifelong commitment and economic independence.

Debates within the summit reflect diverse perspectives on pastoral care. Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão suggested the Church must adapt to modern realities, including new forms of cohabitation and changing understandings of gender. Meanwhile, other leaders emphasized the need for continuous pastoral support that extends beyond the wedding day to the long-term realities of marriage. The summit utilizes a synodal approach, incorporating testimonies from families and experts to discern how the Church can better accompany couples through various life stages and challenges.
