Pope Leo XIV reaffirms Amoris Laetitia pastoral guidelines
Pope Leo XIV has reaffirmed the importance of the apostolic exhortation ‘Amoris Laetitia’, originally published by Pope Francis ten years ago, during a meeting of global bishops' conference leaders in Rome. The document, which focuses on marriage and family pastoral care, has historically been a source of significant division within the Catholic Church.
The controversy stems from the document’s suggestion of a more flexible approach to pastoral care for individuals in ‘irregular’ situations, such as civilly remarried divorcees or LGBTQ+ couples. While conservative factions previously accused the approach of undermining the doctrine of the indissolubility of marriage, Pope Leo XIV rejected speculation that the Church would roll back these openings.
Addressing the assembly, the Pope noted a ‘growing gap’ between contemporary lived experiences of sexuality and intimacy and traditional Christian views on marriage. He emphasized the need for the Church to understand the hopes and anxieties behind modern cultural shifts to ensure pastoral practices effectively reach people.
