Pope Leo XIV declares Argentine Margarita Bavosi venerable

Pope Leo XIV has officially recognized the heroic virtues of Margarita Bavosi, an Argentine laywoman known as ‘Luminosa’, marking a significant step toward her beatification. The decision, announced by the Holy See, allows her to be titled ‘Venerable’, a distinction granted to those deemed to have lived exceptional Christian virtues.

Born in Buenos Aires in 1941 to an Italian immigrant family, Bavosi was a historian who dedicated her life to the Focolare Movement (also known as the Work of Mary). She held leadership roles in the movement, including heading the community in Paraná, Argentina, and later serving in Spain for 14 years at the request of movement founder Chiara Lubich.

Bavosi passed away in 1985 in Albano Laziale, Italy, at the age of 43 due to atypical pulmonary fibrosis. To proceed to beatification, the Catholic Church must typically verify a miracle attributed to her intercession or a declaration of martyrdom.
