Pope Leo XIV recovers after successful lung cancer surgery
Pope Leo XIV is recovering well three days after undergoing surgery to remove a lung nodule at Gemelli University Hospital in Rome. Medical staff reported on October 15 that his routine check-ups, including chest X-rays, have all returned normal results. The 71-year-old Pope has begun walking in his hospital room and has resumed eating.
During the 90-minute video-assisted thoracic surgery, which involved the resection of the lower lobe of his right lung, a biopsy confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma. While doctors believe the cancer was removed, they are awaiting further test results to determine if there has been any metastasis. No complications have been reported.
The Vatican has canceled all official engagements through October 20. It remains uncertain whether the Pope will be able to proceed with his scheduled long-distance apostolic journey to South America, including visits to Uruguay, Argentina, and Peru, set for early next month.
As the first American Pope, Leo XIV's health has drawn global attention. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed support, stating he is “united in prayer” for the Pontiff's recovery.
