Pope Leo XIV condemns death penalty amid U.S. livestreamed execution plans

Pope Leo XIV has condemned the death penalty as ‘inadmissible,’ stating it violates human dignity and the inviolability of life. His remarks, issued on the World Day Against the Death Penalty, emphasize that justice and public safety can be maintained through effective detention systems without resorting to capital punishment.

The Pope’s statement follows an announcement by the U.S. Department of Defense regarding plans to livestream the firing squad execution of Nidal Malik Hasan. Hasan, a former Army major, was convicted for the 2009 Fort Hood massacre in which 13 people were killed and 32 were wounded. The execution is scheduled for December 3, 2026.

The plan to broadcast the execution has drawn significant criticism. Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin described the prospect of turning a death into a public spectacle as ‘unacceptable.’ Additionally, the UN Human Rights Office warned that livestreaming an execution could be considered a form of torture. While U.S. President Donald Trump has supported the execution, the decision to livestream remains a subject of intense debate among religious leaders, lawmakers, and international observers.
