Pope Leo XIV reviews financial recovery plan for Padre Pio's hospital

Pope Leo XIV met with the steering and supervisory commission at Castel Gandolfo to discuss the financial recovery of the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo. Founded by Padre Pio, the institution is currently facing a significant financial crisis, with reported debts approaching 250 million euros.

The commission, established by a papal chirograph in May 2026, presented a strategic plan to ensure the hospital's long-term sustainability. Key priorities include stabilizing relations with staff, strengthening cooperation with Italian public health institutions, securing new resources, and progressively reducing accumulated liabilities.

During the audience, the Pope reviewed the progress of these efforts and emphasized the importance of maintaining the hospital's original spiritual mission and charism while implementing necessary economic reforms. The meeting included high-ranking Vatican officials and representatives from the foundation to coordinate the recovery process.
