Pope Leo XIV thanks Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re for service

Pope Leo XIV has issued a letter of gratitude to Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re following his retirement from the position of Dean of the College of Cardinals. The Pope praised the Cardinal for his admirable service over the past six years and his long-standing dedication to the Holy See.

Cardinal Re’s career includes extensive diplomatic service in Panama and Iran, as well as significant roles within the Roman Curia. He served as a trusted collaborator to several pontiffs, most notably Pope John Paul II, who appointed him to several key positions, including substitute of the Secretariat of State and prefect of the Congregation for Bishops. The Pope highlighted the Cardinal’s vital role in coordinating offices during the Jubilee Year 2000 and his participation in numerous apostolic journeys.
