Pope Leo XIV urges AI ethics at Chile seminar
Pope Leo XIV sent a papal message, transmitted by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, to the organizers of the VII International Church Communications Seminar held on 27‑28 July 2026 at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in Santiago. In the message he called for communication that safeguards human dignity and uses new technologies for truth and the common good, urging a wise and responsible approach to the challenges of artificial intelligence.
The seminar’s theme was "The Challenges of Artificial Intelligence" and it was framed by the encyclical Magnifica Humanitas, which addresses AI and human dignity. Cardinal Fernando Chomali closed the event with a homily that placed the Eucharist at the centre of the Church’s mission and reiterated the pope’s call to address AI responsibly. Portuguese Jesuit provincial Padre António Valério highlighted the need for unity in the Church, warned against polarising discourse, and linked the papal emphasis on synodality to Ignatian spirituality.
Representatives from across Latin America and the Caribbean participated, discussing ethical, cultural and pastoral implications of AI in light of the Pope’s guidance.
