Pope Leo XIV urges firm, public support from cardinals at Vatican consistory

At the opening of the extraordinary consistory on 26 June, Pope Leo XIV addressed more than 130 cardinal-electors in Rome. He called for their “firm, explicit and public” backing of the Church’s mission, stressing the need for collective action, dialogue and daily conversion. The Pope outlined four thematic focal points for the sessions: discerning the world for evangelisation, reflecting on the culture of power, the civilization of love, and drawing guidance from his encyclical *Magnifica Humanitas*.

He reminded the participants that many come from regions marked by war, violence and social polarisation, urging them to bring those experiences into the Church’s service. The consistory, scheduled to run until 27 June, aims to reinforce collaborative leadership within the global Catholic hierarchy.
