Pope Leo XIV visits Lampedusa to highlight migrant plight

Pope Leo XIV arrived on Lampedusa on 4 July 2026 for a brief three‑and‑a‑half‑hour visit funded by the Italian government with roughly €2.5 million. The itinerary included a stop at the island’s “Porta d’Europa” memorial and the local cemetery where victims of recent Mediterranean boat disasters are buried. The visit is expected to draw about 15 000 additional visitors on top of the island’s normal summer tourist flow of roughly 40 000 per month.
