Vatican announces theme for 2027 World Day of Peace

The Vatican has announced that the theme for the 60th World Day of Peace, to be held on January 1, 2027, will be ‘Disarming Technology, Serving Peace. Politics as Preventive Responsibility.’

In his message, Pope Leo XIV will address the moral responsibilities of political leaders and urge the international community to uphold human dignity. A central focus of the message is the ethical risk of delegating military decisions to artificial intelligence. Drawing from his encyclical ‘Magnifica Humanitas,’ the Pope emphasized that ‘no algorithm can make war morally acceptable.’

The announcement follows a July 16 gathering in Rome where Nobel laureates signed a declaration calling for a global treaty to ban the use of artificial intelligence in nuclear launch systems. The Pope is calling for shared international agreements to safeguard humanitarian principles and human responsibility in an era of rapid technological advancement.
