Pope Leo XIV’s ‘Magnifica Humanitas’ Guides Global AI Ethics and Faith Dialogue

Pope Leo XIV has issued the encyclical *Magnifica Humanitas*, urging families and societies to uphold human dignity while confronting the challenges of artificial intelligence. The document calls for "wise architects" of humanity and cautions that reliance on technology may erode genuine human connections.

The encyclical prompted a series of events worldwide. In Castel Gandolfo, Italy, the Global Nobel Laureates Assembly on Artificial Intelligence and Nuclear War convened, with religious leaders under the theme “Faith and the future of humanity in the age of AI and nuclear weapons.” Inter‑faith representatives highlighted values of "acolhida, diálogo e cooperação" as a framework to protect humanity.

In Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, an AI‑Day forum at PUC‑Rio examined the encyclical’s implications for technology, business, regulation and human rights, culminating in a special illumination of the Christ the Redeemer statue.

Practical guidance also appeared in Catholic media, outlining six ways families can apply the encyclical’s principles at home. The Pope’s remarks, such as “a subtle temptation may emerge, namely the thought that the problems are too big and we are too small,” were echoed by AI experts, including Anthropic co‑founder Chris Olah, who met the Pope at the Vatican press conference and urged continued dialogue between the Church and the AI industry.
