Pope Leon XIV releases encyclical warning on AI and transhumanist ideologies

Pope Leon XIV has issued his first encyclical, *Magnifica Humanitas*, urging that modern technology, especially artificial intelligence, remain subordinate to the human person. The document draws a parallel between the industrial‑era debate on capital and labor and today’s digital era, stressing that machines must serve humanity rather than measure it.

The Pope warns that transhumanist and post‑humanist ideologies treat human life as a material to be optimized, which could lead to e‑ugenic practices, de‑humanisation, and the marginalisation of the most vulnerable. He condemns any vision that seeks to hybridise man and machine or to pursue immortality through purely technical means, calling such approaches a danger to dignity, critical judgment and social justice. The encyclical references historical critiques of similar ideas and positions the Church’s social doctrine as a counter‑weight to the push for a "New Society" that would sacrifice the weak in the name of progress.
