Pope Leo XIV leads Assisi Franciscan Youth Meeting and returns to Castel Gandolfo
On 6 August 2026 Pope Leo XIV arrived in Assisi for the GO! Franciscan Youth Meeting, marking the 800th anniversary of Saint Francis’s death. He departed the Vatican by helicopter at 08:00, landing about half an hour later on the Migaghelli field in the Santa Maria degli Angeli complex. He was greeted by Archbishop Felice Accrocca, regional governor Stefania Proietti and local officials. At 08:45 the Pope answered questions from young participants in the piazza, then met Franciscan friars before celebrating Mass in the basilica at 10:30. He returned to the Vatican before 13:00.
Earlier, from 5 July to 27 July 2026, Pope Leo XIV spent 23 days at his summer residence in Castel Gandolfo. He left the palace on the evening of 27 July after a brief farewell and blessing of children. He returned on 29 July for the Cantico di Pace prayer gathering. During his stay he visited the Benedictine abbey of Montecassino on 20 July and the sanctuary of the Holy Trinity in Vallepietra on 22 July, among other pastoral activities.
