Pope Leon XIV's Barcelona visit sparks massive security deployment and volunteer aid

Pope Leon XIV arrived in Barcelona for a high‑profile pastoral visit, presiding over a solemn Mass at the Sagrada Família in the presence of Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia. The ceremony celebrated the inauguration of the new Tower of Jesus, which the pontiff described as a “visible Bible” and a sign of spiritual hope.

To secure the events at the Sagrada Família, Montserrat and the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, thousands of police and emergency personnel were mobilised. Around 200 civil‑protection volunteers from across Catalonia joined the operation, assisting with crowd‑risk prevention, guiding attendees, providing basic medical aid and supporting people with reduced mobility. The volunteers also intervened in a reported sexual‑assault incident, detaining a suspect until police arrived. Participants came from numerous municipalities and represented a wide range of professions, highlighting the strategic role of volunteer groups in large‑scale public‑safety plans.
