Pope Leone XIV condemns human traffickers during Spain visit

Pope Leone XIV spent a week travelling through Spain, including a surprise meeting with pop star Bad Bunny and remarks on artificial‑intelligence jokes. In a speech to the Spanish parliament he outlined his pontifical programme to bridge polarisation in the Church and, where possible, in wider society. He warned that human‑trafficking networks must “stop and convert”, invoking the language previously used against the mafia, and called on migrants to learn the language, respect the laws and engage in reciprocal integration. The Pope also urged the faithful to break the chains of exploitation, referencing the suffering of migrants and the moral failure of societies that ignore sea‑borne tragedies. A planned return flight was cancelled after a technical fault with the papal aircraft, prompting the Pope to issue further statements on the spot.

The visit highlighted the Vatican’s focus on migration, human‑rights concerns and the need for societal cohesion, linking the Pope’s religious leadership with contemporary political debates in both Italy and Spain.
