Saint Pius X commemorated for his Church reforms and pastoral legacy

The Catholic Church commemorates the memorial of Saint Pius X, who served as Pope from 1903 to 1914. Born Giuseppe Melchiorre Sarto in Riese, Italy, to a humble peasant family, he rose through the ecclesiastical ranks as a parish priest, bishop of Mantua, and Patriarch of Venice before his election to the papacy.

His pontificate was defined by the motto ‘Instaurare omnia in Christo’ (To restore all things in Christ). Key reforms included the promotion of frequent Holy Communion and lowering the age for First Communion to approximately seven years old. He also initiated the significant work of codifying Canon Law, which eventually led to the 1917 Code, and implemented liturgical reforms such as the restoration of Gregorian chant.

As a defender of doctrine, he took a firm stance against Modernism, most notably through the encyclical Pascendi Dominici Gregis. He is remembered for his pastoral simplicity, his dedication to catechesis, and his efforts to modernize the administrative structures of the Roman Curia.
