Poppina apple joins Slow Food’s Ark of Taste
The Poppina apple, an ancient variety from the Varese Prealps, has been included in Slow Food’s Ark of Taste. This international catalog features traditional food products at risk of disappearing due to biodiversity loss and food consumption homogenization.
Characterized by a rustic, fragrant, and intense acidic flavor, the Poppina apple is a traditional peasant variety. It has recently undergone genetic characterization and was recognized by ISPRA as biodiversity that requires recovery due to its adaptability and historical agricultural significance.
The inclusion follows over a decade of conservation efforts, including the protection of historical orchards and research initiatives. Federico Raos, the mayor of Orino, noted that the recognition places the municipality on the national map of biodiversity to be protected and promoted.
