Poppy Yayakos joins World Literacy Foundation as Author Patron

Darwin-based educator, children’s author, and literacy advocate Poppy Yayakos has been appointed as an Author Patron for the World Literacy Foundation’s Sun Books: Global Children’s Library.

Yayakos, who also serves as a World Literacy Foundation Ambassador, utilizes rhyme and engaging storytelling to support young readers. Her involvement with the Global Children’s Library allows her work to be accessible in multiple languages, a development she noted has allowed her Greek-speaking family members in Greece to engage with her stories in their native language.

Beyond her writing, Yayakos has led various community literacy initiatives in Australia, including establishing pop-up libraries in laundromats, collaborating with Reading Out of Poverty to install bookshelves, and mobilizing the collection of over 1,000 donated books. She also provides literacy resources to approximately 1,000 families through regional newsletters and hosts community workshops for parents and children.
