Population declines hit Nagasaki and Aichi's Mikawa region in Japan

Recent data shows Nagasaki prefecture’s total population fell by about 80,000 over the past five years, bringing it to roughly 1.23 million, according to the Nagasaki Shimbun’s front‑page report that also noted a nationwide decline of about 309,000.

In Aichi Prefecture’s Mikawa region, the 2025 census recorded a 2 % drop in population, ending a period of growth driven by inflow of workers to its manufacturing sector. Analysts link the slowdown to increased automation and anticipate further reductions in net migration.
