Porcupine sightings in Kentucky remain rare

North American porcupines are present across the United States, but they are not native to Kentucky. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources reports that, as of 2021, there have probably been fewer than five credible sightings in the state. Zach Couch, a department spokesperson, said the limited numbers may be linked to a growing porcupine population in neighboring West Virginia.

The animals are nocturnal and tend to avoid humans, making them difficult to spot in the wild. The best chances to see a porcupine in Kentucky are at a zoo or at Wendt's Wildlife Adventure in Carlisle. While many states permit private ownership of porcupines, officials warn against keeping them as pets because of their defensive quills.
