Pordenone school menus spark debate over pork removal

A debate has emerged in the Pordenone region of Italy regarding the removal of pork from school menus. In several municipalities, traditional meat products such as prosciutto di San Daniele are being replaced by alternatives like chicken curry and couscous.

Journalist Vittorio Feltri has criticized these changes, arguing that removing pork to accommodate students of different faiths represents a surrender of Italian culinary traditions and identity. He contends that inclusion should involve adding diverse options rather than subtracting traditional ones.

In response to the controversy, Matteo Zolin, President of Coldiretti Pordenone, suggested that the focus should instead be on removing ultra-processed foods from school meals to prevent chronic diseases in children. Zolin emphasized the importance of the Mediterranean Diet and local, seasonal products as essential educational tools for students.
