Pordenone tree removal for parking expansion sparks protests

On August 5, municipal authorities in Pordenone, Italy, cut down several large cedar trees on Via Vallona as part of a redevelopment plan to create additional parking spaces behind an existing multi‑storey car park. The project, promoted by Mayor Alessandro Basso, aims to reorganise traffic and increase parking capacity.

The felling was carried out despite weeks of protests, sit‑ins and a formal objection from local residents, environmental groups and opposition councilors. Regional Democratic Party councilor Nicola Conficoni posted a video denouncing the act as a political betrayal of campaign promises, citing a letter from agronomists that the technical report did not require removal of the biggest cedar. The municipality proceeded with the schedule, and the incident has intensified debate over urban development versus green‑space protection.
