Porepunkah community recovers after Dezi Freeman manhunt
The community of Porepunkah in Victoria’s high country is processing the aftermath of a major manhunt involving Dezi Freeman, formerly known as Desmond Filby. The incident began when tactical police attempted to serve a warrant related to a child sexual abuse investigation at Freeman’s off-grid residence.
During the encounter, Freeman shot and killed two police officers and injured a third. After stealing a police pistol, the 56-year-old fugitive vanished into the Buckland River area, triggering one of Australia’s largest manhunts. The search lasted several months before Freeman was eventually located.
