Pornic prepares for sheep transhumance and protection dog awareness

A transhumance event is scheduled for October 7, 2026, in which approximately 350 sheep will migrate from Pornic to Préfailles. This movement is part of the ecological management of the Port-aux-Goths – Portmain natural site, managed by the Loire-Atlantique Department in partnership with the Conservatoire du littoral and local pastoral groups.

The flock, belonging to the Landes de Retz pastoral group, will follow a specific route through several streets in Pornic before arriving in Préfailles around 3:30 PM. The operation will be supervised by approximately 30 people, including shepherds and a veterinarian to assist animals if necessary. Local municipal police and city services will be deployed to ensure the safety of both the flock and the public.

In conjunction with such movements, there is an increasing focus on the role of protection dogs used by breeders. These dogs are selected for specific genetic traits to provide autonomous protection for flocks by deterring predators while remaining calm around humans. Experts emphasize the importance of understanding canine social codes and behaviors to manage the coexistence of these animals with local populations and other activities in the territory.
