Porsanger gathering addresses sea Sami fishing rights

A two-day gathering was held in Porsanger on August 14 and 15 to address sea Sami fishing rights. Organized by Porsanger Sameforening, Mearrasiida, Bivdu, and Sjøsamisk Tun with support from the Sami Parliament, the event brought together researchers, organizations, and local fishers to discuss rights, management, and the future of sea Sami fishing.

Discussions covered historical usage, legal foundations, and current management challenges. Experts, including Professor Øyvind Ravna from UiT, highlighted the impact of previous legal cases such as Selbu, Fosen, and Karasjok on sea Sami rights. The event included workshops aimed at moving from knowledge sharing to actionable follow-up work.

Separately, the leadership of Sør-Norges Fiskarlag has announced that ‘responsible fisheries’ will be a primary focus at their upcoming annual meeting in December. The organization emphasizes that responsible fishing encompasses sustainable harvesting, adherence to regulations, and professional conduct within the industry to ensure long-term resource availability and community trust.
