Porsche and Volkswagen shift strategy toward hybrid engines
Major German automakers Porsche and Volkswagen are shifting their powertrain strategies toward hybrid technology and increased flexibility.
Porsche is revising its transition to zero-emission mobility, considering the potential withdrawal of the Taycan model by 2030. Instead of focusing exclusively on battery electric vehicles, the company is adopting a 'technology openness' approach, investing simultaneously in internal combustion engines, hybrid systems, and electric vehicles. This includes maintaining gasoline and high-performance hybrid options for the iconic 911 model. Porsche also aims to simplify its lineup to improve profitability and exclusivity while continuing development on electric models like the Macan and Cayenne.
Similarly, Volkswagen is planning a gradual phase-out of diesel engines across most of its range, limiting them primarily to the Tiguan and Passat models. The company intends to prioritize full hybrid systems to reduce emissions and serve as an alternative to pure electric vehicles. This strategic shift is also designed to manage group-wide emissions; by meeting targets through hybrid and electric volume, Volkswagen aims to share emission credits with brands like Audi and Porsche, allowing them to continue offering high-performance combustion engine models.
