Porsche confirms all future 718 Boxster and Cayman models will be electric

Porsche has confirmed that the next generation of the 718 Boxster and Cayman models will be exclusively electric. Despite previous speculation that internal policy shifts might allow for internal combustion engine versions, corporate communications head Matthias Rauter stated that fuel-powered variants were never officially confirmed and were not approved by the board.

The new electric models are expected to debut in 2027, with 2028 projected to be the first full year of production. Technical details indicate the vehicles will utilize an 800-volt electrical system with a structural battery pack positioned behind the seats to maintain a low center of gravity and driving position.

To replicate the driving experience of traditional sports cars, Porsche plans to include artificial soundscapes similar to a GT3 engine and a simulated gear-shifting system. This system is designed to release extra torque during shifts to mimic the sensation of gear changes without interrupting power delivery.
