Porsche to integrate GaN semiconductors into high-end audio by 2027
Porsche, in collaboration with the University of Stuttgart, is introducing gallium nitride (GaN) semiconductor technology into its Burmester 3D High-End Surround Sound System. This marks the first application of GaN in a high-end mass-produced automotive audio system.
Scheduled for series production in 2027, the technology will be used in the voltage conversion for a 400W subwoofer amplifier. Compared to traditional silicon-based components, GaN transistors offer higher switching frequencies and lower energy loss through heat. This increased efficiency allows for more compact and lightweight hardware. Specifically, Porsche expects to reduce the weight of heat sinks by approximately 20% and decrease the size of passive components.
The shift to GaN also offers environmental benefits, as the reduction in aluminum required for heat sinks leads to lower energy consumption and CO2 emissions during the manufacturing process. While the specific vehicle models have not yet been announced, Porsche has confirmed the technology will debut in a future model in 2027.
