Porsche to reintroduce combustion Macan models by 2028
Porsche is developing a new internal combustion engine (ICE) and plug-in hybrid SUV, expected to debut in 2028, to complement its existing electric Macan lineup. This move reverses a previous strategy to transition the Macan nameplate exclusively to battery-electric power.
Recent sightings of test mules at the Nürburgring reveal that Porsche is using Audi Q5 bodies as shells to test the new vehicle, internally referred to as project ‘Octan’. These prototypes feature wider tracks, bulging wheel arches, and a raised stance, indicating significant differences in chassis and powertrain compared to the donor Audi models. The new SUV is expected to utilize the Volkswagen Group’s Premium Platform Combustion.
The upcoming model is anticipated to offer turbocharged four-cylinder and V6 engine options, alongside plug-in hybrid variants. While the ‘Macan’ name may be reserved for electric models, the new combustion SUV will occupy the segment below the Cayenne. The decision to reintroduce ICE options follows slower-than-expected demand for electric vehicles in certain markets, such as North America.
