Porsche to reintroduce gasoline Macan alongside electric models
Porsche CEO Michael Leiters has announced a strategic shift to offer a dual lineup of internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicles. A key component of this plan is the return of a gasoline-powered Macan in 2028, which will be sold alongside the existing electric version.
This pivot follows challenging business performance, including a 40% year-on-year decline in electric Macan sales during the first half of the year and a 32% drop in deliveries in China. Leiters noted that the company had relied too heavily on electric vehicles before the market was fully prepared. To stabilize the company, Porsche has reached an agreement to reduce its workforce by 9,000 employees by 2035 and is closing divisions related to electric bikes, batteries, and software.
To improve liquidity, Porsche recently generated approximately 1 billion euros by selling stakes in Bugatti Rimac and the Rimac Group. While the company continues to develop electric models, such as the 718, Leiters confirmed that the iconic 911 model will not transition to an all-electric platform.
