Porsche to reintroduce gasoline-powered Macan in 2028
Porsche CEO Michael Leiters has announced a strategic shift to reintroduce gasoline-powered versions of the Macan SUV in 2028. This move marks a departure from previous plans to transition the Macan line exclusively to electric vehicles (EVs). Leiters emphasized a “balanced strategy” that allows for the parallel sale of both internal combustion engine (ICE) and EV models to meet diverse customer needs and address slowing EV market growth.
Under this new direction, Porsche aims to offer customers more choice within the same segment. While the company continues the development of the fully electric 718 compact sports car, Leiters has ruled out a full EV transition for the flagship 911, opting instead for hybrid technologies.
In addition to powertrain adjustments, the company is undergoing significant restructuring to improve profitability. This includes cost-cutting measures aimed at reducing the workforce by approximately 9,000 jobs by 2035. To drive growth, Leiters is pivoting toward a model of increased exclusivity and higher margins, exemplified by the presentation of a new high-end super sports car design study intended for small-scale production.
