Porsche unveils gallium nitride-based high-end audio system

Porsche has announced the development of an innovative high-end surround sound system for its Burmester audio setup, utilizing gallium nitride (GaN) technology. Developed in collaboration with the University of Stuttgart, the system is designed to be more powerful, lighter, and more compact than traditional silicon-based components.

By using GaN-based high-performance chips to manage voltage conversion for a 400-watt subwoofer amplifier, the system achieves higher switching frequencies and lower energy losses. This increased efficiency results in significantly less heat generation, allowing for a 20% reduction in the weight of the heat sink and smaller passive components. The technology also offers environmental benefits by reducing the amount of aluminum required for cooling, thereby lowering CO2 emissions during production.

The development project began in mid-2023 and is expected to enter mass production for future Porsche models starting in 2027. The company has already filed several patents to protect these technological advancements.
