Porsha Williams highlights uterine fibroid disparities in Black women
Porsha Williams, star of ‘The Real Housewives of Atlanta’, recently shared that she underwent an emergency partial hysterectomy after doctors discovered 21 uterine fibroids, one of which was reportedly the size of a cantaloupe. Williams reported experiencing symptoms such as fatigue, migraines, and prolonged periods.
Her experience highlights broader racial disparities in reproductive health. Black women face higher rates of fibroids and often experience severe complications. Research suggests that symptoms are frequently dismissed or misdiagnosed by medical professionals, and a lack of open conversation regarding menstruation can lead to delayed diagnoses. Williams joins other public figures, including Lupita Nyong’o, in speaking out to reduce the silence surrounding the condition.
