Port of Valencia to double power capacity with new substation

The Port Authority of Valencia has launched procedures to construct a new 110 MW electrical substation, a project valued at approximately €15.6 million. Funded in part by the European Commission through the Connecting Europe Facility, the infrastructure will feature two 55 MW transformers and utilize gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) technology to minimize environmental impact and land use.

The new substation aims to double the port's power supply capacity, supporting the growing energy demands of cargo terminals, logistics platforms, and Onshore Power Supply (OPS) systems. This will allow berthed vessels to connect to the land-based electrical grid and shut off their auxiliary engines, reducing emissions and noise pollution. Additionally, the dual-substation setup enhances operational resilience by providing a backup supply during maintenance or network faults, ensuring continuous power for critical operations like refrigerated container storage and crane activity.

In other regional developments, the Port of Sevilla has begun maintenance dredging across seven sections of the Guadalquivir waterway to restore safe navigation depths following heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, the Port of Vigo has installed large-scale bollard barriers to enhance pedestrian safety for cruise passengers in docking areas.
