Port Autonome de Cotonou reports high efficiency and growth

The Port Autonome de Cotonou (PAC) is reporting significant operational efficiency and growth, positioning itself as a competitive hub in West Africa. During the ‘PAC Media Connect’ event in early October 2026, port officials highlighted that container waiting times at Cotonou are maintained between 36 and 72 hours. This stands in stark contrast to neighboring regional ports, where vessels reportedly face delays of six weeks to two months due to congestion levels reaching 200% to 250%.

In terms of commercial activity, the PAC saw a 52% increase in cargo volume, rising from 9.6 million tonnes in 2024 to approximately 14.7 million tonnes in 2025. The number of vessels welcomed also grew from 725 to 841 during that period.

To manage this growth, the port is undergoing several modernization and expansion projects. These include the extension of terminal 5 and the port basin, with partial delivery expected by the end of the year. Other ongoing developments include the Zongo parking area, a new fishing port project scheduled to begin maritime works in December, and the construction of a maritime business center. Digitalization efforts are also being implemented to better regulate truck flows and optimize logistics.
