Port Autonome de Lomé reaches 91st in global container port rankings

The Port Autonome de Lomé (PAL) has risen to 91st place in the 2026 Lloyd’s List ‘One Hundred Container Ports’ ranking, marking its sixth consecutive year in the global top 100. This represents a three-place improvement from its previous position of 94th.

In Africa, the Togolese port is ranked 5th, following Tanger Med in Morocco, Port Said and Alexandria in Egypt, and Durban in South Africa. It currently leads other regional ports such as Tema in Ghana and Mombasa in Kenya. The ranking is based on container volumes processed in 2025.

The port’s growth is driven largely by transshipment, which now accounts for more than two-thirds of its activity. In 2024, container traffic reached 2 million TEUs, a 5.19% increase from the previous year, while total port traffic rose to 30.6 million tonnes. The facility serves as a critical maritime hub for West African hinterland countries, including Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and northern Nigeria. Director General Kokou Edem Tengue stated that the ranking reflects efforts to enhance competitiveness, though he noted the need for continued digitalization and infrastructure investment to meet international demands.
