Port-Cartier breaks ground on 65 affordable housing units
Construction has officially begun on a new 65-unit affordable housing complex located on Boulevard des Îles in Port-Cartier. The four-story building is designed to serve low-to-moderate-income households and aims to address the region's significant housing shortage, where vacancy rates have fallen below 1%.
The project, which has an estimated cost of over $26 million, is being led by the Corporation de développement de logements (CODELO) of Sept-Îles. Local officials, including Mayor Danielle Beaupré and Minister Kateri Champagne Jourdain, participated in the groundbreaking ceremony to highlight the project's importance for local families, seniors, and the community's social fabric.
The building is expected to welcome its first tenants in the fall of 2027. The initiative involves collaboration between various partners, including the governments of Quebec and Canada.
