Canada and U.S. negotiate trade deal to avert new tariffs FAST-MOVING

Canada and the United States are engaged in high-stakes negotiations to finalize a trade agreement and avert a new round of punitive tariffs. U.S. President Donald Trump has implemented a three-day suspension of planned 50% tariffs on Canadian goods to allow negotiators more time to refine the deal.

Key components of the tentative pact reportedly include reducing tariffs on Canadian-built vehicles from 25% to 15% and halving duties on steel and aluminum from 50% to 25%. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has briefed provincial leaders on the progress, noting that while substantial advancements have been made, significant work remains. To facilitate the deal, Carney has urged provinces to end bans on American alcohol and remove procurement policies that specifically exclude U.S. suppliers.

Negotiations continue in Washington, with Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and Chief Negotiator Janice Charette meeting with U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Additionally, President Trump has suggested that a finalized agreement could lead to the revival of the Keystone XL Pipeline. While some sectors, such as Ontario greenhouse vegetable producers, remain cautious due to the unpredictable nature of the talks, the framework is expected to preserve Canada’s dairy and poultry supply management systems.
