Port Everglades receives largest cargo ship to date amid depth restrictions

Port Everglades recently welcomed the MSC Vandya, the largest cargo ship to ever visit the port. The vessel has a gross tonnage of 143,521 and a capacity of 13,050 TEUs.

However, current water depth restrictions limited the ship's efficiency. Due to these constraints, the vessel could only carry a maximum of 8,000 TEUs, meaning it arrived with a light load. Port Everglades CEO Joseph Morris noted that such restrictions force modern, sustainable vessels to operate at a disadvantage, increasing transport costs and times.

The Port Everglades Navigation Improvements Project (PENIP), authorized by Congress in 2016, aims to address these issues. The project, involving the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, seeks to deepen the main channel from 42 feet to 50 feet and widen the Intracoastal Waterway to allow the safe passage of larger, more efficient ships.
