Port-Gentil hospital to host infant hearing screening campaign
The Centre hospitalier régional (CHR) de Ntchengué in Port-Gentil, in partnership with the Edelweiss clinic, will host a hearing screening campaign for infants aged 0 to 6 months from September 1 to September 3, 2026.
Organized by CHR Director General Jonas Mboumba and ENT specialists, the initiative aims to detect hearing impairments early to support language acquisition and communication development. The campaign is open to all infants in the municipality, regardless of whether they were born at the hospital, at home, or in another medical facility.
Beyond clinical intervention, the campaign seeks to collect local data on the prevalence of childhood deafness in Port-Gentil. Medical professionals noted that while international data exists, local statistics are limited. This data may be used to advocate for strengthened systematic screening and improved care protocols within Gabon.
