Port Hardy boy raises $6,000 for cancer research through hair donation

Rory Hutchinson, a 12-year-old from Port Hardy, recently donated his long hair to support cancer research and pediatric care. After growing his hair for approximately two and a half years, Hutchinson had his 12-inch locks cut to raise nearly $6,000 for Cops for Cancer.

Cops for Cancer is a partnership between first responders and the Canadian Cancer Society that funds pediatric cancer research and provides support for affected children and families. Hutchinson’s donation also supports Wigs for Kids, an organization affiliated with the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation.

The fundraiser was motivated by personal connections to the cause, including a neighbor who survived acute lymphocytic leukemia. Hutchinson chose to complete the donation in September to coincide with Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and the Cops for Cancer ride.
