Port Hope residents oppose proposed nuclear power plant
The Ontario government's proposal to construct a major new nuclear power plant near Port Hope has met significant local opposition. While Energy Minister Stephen Lecce and local officials have framed the project as a vital step toward a secure energy future, many residents remain wary due to the community's historical connection to the nuclear industry.
Port Hope has a long history of radioactive contamination stemming from the Eldorado mining company's radium refinery operations in the 1930s. During the Second World War, the plant refined uranium for the Manhattan Project, and over several decades, contaminated soil and materials were used as backfill throughout the community. Residents argue that the new project ignores this legacy of environmental impact.
