Port of Avilés to acquire and remediate former coke battery lands

The Port of Avilés intends to formalize a purchase option with Sepides for the land previously occupied by coke batteries. This acquisition is part of the PORTIA (Port & Industry Asturias) project, which aims to transform the 327,255 square meters of land into a green industrial park.

Negotiations have focused on the final price and the scope of environmental remediation. The decontamination process is estimated to cost 12.8 million euros. The project may benefit from Just Transition Funds, which could cover up to 9.3 million euros, or approximately 70% of the total cost, providing a safety net against unforeseen expenses.

The Port of Avilés has included 51.4 million euros in its 2026-2030 investment plan to cover the acquisition, decontamination, and urbanization of the site. However, due to administrative procedures, the land is expected to be available by 2030, representing at least a five-year delay from the initial timelines previously announced by Sepides.
