Port of Barcelona: Ten workers poisoned by gas in vessel hold

Ten workers were affected by carbon dioxide poisoning in the hold of the vessel ‘Ocean Euphrosine’ at the Port of Barcelona. The incident occurred around midnight on Friday at the flammable goods pier while the ship was operating following a vegetable oil discharge.

Emergency services reported that one worker is in critical condition and has been transferred to the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. Another worker is in serious condition, along with four others with less serious injuries, all of whom were taken to Hospital Moisès Broggi in Sant Joan Despí. Four additional people received medical attention for mild symptoms, and nine others were uninjured.

Emergency response teams included the Barcelona Fire Department, Civil Guard, Port Police, and multiple medical units. The Civil Guard and the Maritime Captaincy have opened an investigation to determine the causes of the gas leak and to review the safety conditions present during the work in the vessel's hold.
