Port of Beirut expansion aims to boost capacity to 3 million containers

The Port of Beirut is undergoing a major expansion project aimed at transforming the facility into a competitive logistics hub in the Eastern Mediterranean. The project involves increasing the container terminal's area from 50 hectares to over 75 hectares, with the goal of raising annual capacity from approximately 1.3 million to 3 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) by 2028.

CMA CGM has committed to investing roughly $100 million in these expansion works. This development follows a period of rising activity, with July 2025 seeing a 39 percent increase in container volume compared to the same month in 2024, marking the highest monthly level since 2019.

Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam emphasized that the port's development is inseparable from the broader project of rebuilding the state. He noted that successful operation requires transparent management, strict adherence to safety and security standards, and the application of laws without exception to ensure the port can effectively serve as a transit and re-export center for the region.
