Port of Brest designated as major floating wind turbine hub

The French government has designated the Port of Brest as a primary industrial hub for the construction of floating wind turbines. To support France’s goal of reaching 45GW of floating wind power by 2050, Brest will receive €58 million in state funding to upgrade its infrastructure. Under the InFloW project, the port will centralize the industrial value chain, focusing on the assembly, integration, and storage of large-scale turbine components.

Complementing this, the Port of Lorient is positioned to serve as a strategic base for maintenance, mooring logistics, and service operations, particularly for the upcoming Pennavel floating offshore wind farm. The expansion of these maritime hubs in Brittany is expected to create approximately 4,000 jobs and reduce CO2 emissions by 850,000 tonnes by 2050.

However, the expansion of offshore wind in the region faces local opposition. Approximately fifty people, including fishermen, environmental associations, and local officials, recently demonstrated on the island of Batz against the Bretagne Nord Ouest project. Opponents have raised concerns regarding maritime safety for fishing vessels, the impact on tourism, and the visual alteration of the seascape.
